American Free Style Karate – Spartanburg Martial Arts teaches a very modern and diverse style known as American “Free Style” Karate. During your training at Spartanburg Martial Arts you will learn the hard style techniques of Japanese Karate, the explosive kicking dynamics of Taekwondo, the powerful punching skills of Boxing, and grappling techniques of Jui Jitsu. Although we have a high regard for the origin and teaching methods of the traditional martial arts styles, we are not bound to one art or system. Our martial art style is always expanding in knowledge and training concepts. American “Free Style” utilizes aspects of many different arts and blends them into a very adaptive and effective method of self-defense and fitness training.
American Kenpo Karate is one of the most effective self-defense systems available. Flexibility is not required, as we do not practice all those flashy head kicks you see on TV. Kenpo kicks are to the lower regions of the body. Kenpo Karate teaches you how to use almost every part of your body to defend yourself when you are in serious danger — in other words we use a lot of knees, elbows, heel of the palm strikes, finger strikes, head butts, etc. Coach Robert’s Kenpo class is a special self-defense class for adults only (teens are allowed, but no kids below the age of 12). It’s easy to learn, fun to learn, SAFE to learn (no injuries!) and highly rewarding!
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu – Each technique is repeated many times then we use resistance drills to make the reaction second nature. We simulate some of the most common street attacks with possible variations to give the student an awareness of what could happen. The reality is that it takes time to develop the moves in order to be effective. Confidence builds as the student uses the moves in intense situation drills. Better your odds of surviving on the street with Brazilian Jiu-jitsu!
Mixed Martial Arts is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques, from a mixture of martial arts traditions and non-traditions, to be used in competitions. The rules allow the use of striking and grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground. Such competitions allow martial artists of different backgrounds to compete.
Fitness Kickboxing is a hybrid of boxing, martial arts and aerobics. Offering an intense cross-training and total-body workout it utilizes the training routines used by martial artists in the sports of boxing and kickboxing. The objective is not to make a “fighter” out of you, but rather to give a balanced overall program that combines a cardio aerobic workout with the techniques for self-defense. There is no physical contact in the class – it is offered as an alternative to conventional aerobics.
